ABOUT
TARA CULL.

My art is inspired by the quiet beauty of nature and the character of Australian birds. I’m drawn to the textures, colours and patterns I notice on my travels, and how they connect the natural and built world. Each piece is an exploration of balance, detail and the feeling of being grounded in a moment.

’m Tara Cull, a Melbourne artist and learning designer. My work explores the balance between realism, design and play. I paint Australian birds, botanicals and landscapes, using layers of spray paint, fine detail and colour to create depth and movement.

My background in watercolour still influences how I paint, even though I now work mainly in acrylics. I love blending precision with freedom, layering bold shapes, textures and sprayed backgrounds with fine brushwork. Each piece becomes a mix of structure and spontaneity, just like the world that inspires it but always with the permission to sometimes let go of the rules a little bit.

Alongside painting, I work as a learning designer and I genuinely love it. MIxing the two is what really ignites my passion. My days are spent thinking about how people learn and how to make complex ideas simple and meaningful. Painting gives me a different kind of focus. It lets me experiment, slow down and connect with nature in a more intuitive way. Both practices balance and feed each other, and both provide me the space to be creative. I often get to use my creative skills to creative fun learning visuals like some of the sketchnotes and graphic recording projects you'll see on my page.

Nature is my starting point, but I’m also drawn to the contrast between natural and urban forms. It's definitely my background in landscape architecture and my days learning about plants that inspired me to look at the details but also abstract the shapes. I enjoy exploring how bold, geometric shapes can sit beside delicate feathers or leaves, finding harmony in the mix of organic and constructed worlds.

My art celebrates connection between people, places and the quiet moments that remind us of who we are. Each painting has its own story and invites the viewer to pause, reflect and find a sense of stillness in the noise of everyday life. Even if I never sold another painting, I’d still feel fulfilled. What I value most is the creative process itself, the practice, the curiosity and the space to explore without expectation. It’s not always about the finished piece, but about staying open to where the process leads.
